Topic: What's your favorite Hot Dog, (and sausage)? I love hot dogs, need opinion....
Posted By: Jozzieo on 03/26/05 10:27pm I have really only tried a few, Ball Park Franks, Plumper's, and my current favorite; Nathans.
I would really like to find more to try, could you give me some tips?

I like Sauerkraut, mustard and relish on mine.

Thanks, Jim.

Posted By: joossens on 03/26/05 10:54pm Hate to ruffle feathers but I tried the Sarbrettes and they weren't as good as Nathan's. Sarbrettes do smell good when they're cooking though. Just not quite as tasty. But close!

WARNING: Boar's Head brand hot dogs are the ABSOLUTE WORST hot dogs you'll ever try to choke down. They'll gag a maggot. Absolutely nasty! They are also the most expensive I've ever bought.

Even though they are el echeapos the Walmart brand beef hot dogs are pretty good.

Nothing has beat out Nathan's yet. After the Boar's Head fiasco I'm disinclined to experiment with other hot dogs. I've noticed Nathans are hard to find in some southern states.

Posted By: Jozzieo on 03/27/05 06:06am This is fun,

I got great replies from all of you night owls!
I hope I wasn't a bad influence on you, at the wee hours of the morning.
I can see water boiling, microwaves buzzing and the smell of hot doggies in the air. (Then the sound of Tums being shook from the bottle.)

I guess I wasn't too far off the mark with my choice of Nathans.
I also like Johnsonville Brats, and Ekrich a great deal.

I will try to get the Zwiegles, Sabrettes, Ted's, Earl Campbells, Koegels, and when I make my journey to the far North, Bavarian Smokies in Dawson.

I will avoid Boar's Head like poison!
My region here in the Midwest will surely limit my choice, but I shall insert these names into my travel book in the TT, and look for them in our trips around the country.
Hopefully we will see some more good names in Sausage.
I really like Jimmy Dean's Maple flavored little yummies.
(I don't even want to know how they get the flavor in them, we like to think there is some nice Vermont lady with an apron on, pouring Maple syrup in the sausage, but it's probably some sweaty chemist with a cigarette in his mouth pouring a green liquid out of a beaker!)

Thanks, for all the great reply's, can't wait for lunch, NASCAR, chips, Tomato soup, Nathan's.

Jim, the ever hungry one.

BTW, there's an exhaustive thread on what's the best hot dog on this BB within the last year or so-- many must have been regional hot dogs because i've never heard of many.

Posted By: Bearnkat on 03/27/05 06:33am For regular hot dogs over the campfire, I like Ball Parks or Nathan's.

As too topping, I'm a chili dog fan topping with chili, mustard, pickle relish and onions! IMHO, it doesn't get much better than that.

Posted By: Boating Woody on 03/27/05 07:03am I usually like mine most when they are cooked !

I have never met a hotdog that skewering on a stick and roasting on a bed of coals couldn't make tasty.

Honestly, I am not too picky. However, Ekrich and Armour make some pretty good 'dogs. I also like the local favorites, like Queen City and Johnsonville, especially for Metwurst and Bratwurst.

...Were you including them as well ?

Posted By: Lynne Jayzee on 03/27/05 07:14am Another vote for Nathan's...which I didn't realize were so overwhelmingly popular.

People around here will swear by the dogs sold at a local joint called The Galloping Hill Inn at Five Points. It's one of my favorite "good food, no fuss" places to eat, but I usually order a Philly cheese steak when I'm there.

In Maine, Jordan's Red Hots and another red hot dog made by another company (whose name escapes me) are all natural ingredients and VERY tasty. No, they are not spicy hot, just good eating. When in Maine, try them, all the supermarkets sell them!

When it comes to sausages (being of German decent), I think you need to find a local German butcher who makes their own. I love bratwurst, weisswurst, knockwurst and all variations. We have a local German butcher from Jackson, NJ called Hullers Black Forest that makes all his own. He used to have a website where you could order online, but think he dropped it. Good eating!

When I visit my sister in Mt. Pleasant, SC (north of Charleston), I go to a place on Rt. 17 called the Cosmic Hot Dog or something close to that, WOW do they have a variety of dogs and toppings, with weird names to match...bleu cheese cole slaw (great add on), pickles, chili, onions...a "cosmic" experience to say the least.

I spent 7 years in the Navy At NAS Brunswick and I absolutly MISS these. Jordans are "THE BEST" Hot dog ever. We cannot find anything close on the west coast to these. We have a local dog thats pretty good. Its made by Cloverdale and called the Mariner Dog. Its served at Safco Field for the Mariner Games and they had such a calling they market them locally. Expensive though. I buy them on sale. Other wise its Ballparks.

Maine lobstershop sure is making a hell of a profit on Jordans. I need to find a cheaper way to get em.

Try meeting up with Boar's Head Brand hot dogs. Warning have a barf bag handy. They have two different kinds one with and without a natural casing. I tried the ones without the natural casingand grilled them. It may be they are are supposed to be cooked in water like the Sarbrettes. Grilled they shrivel away to nothing, are dry, hard skinned, chewy and just plain taste bad. Did I mention they're expensive?

There was a PBS show called "The Hotdog Program" that went all over the country showing different hotdog places. Makes me hungry everytime I watch it.

Posted By: GerryB54 on 03/27/05 10:37am I've not been able to locate the other red hot dog maker from Maine, and FYI, I'm sure Jordan's was bought out by them. I wouldn't buy red hots from the link I supplied either, highway robbery!

Any Mainers want to give us the red hot maker? Hannaford's sells them in their deli department.

Hollyeats Hot Dog Page sure has a lot of hot dog vendors listed. Hot dogs for Easter dinner?

Oh, best is to bring them to boil, and then let them sit just warm enough..for hrs. Not too much water though. They need to ferment in their own juices! Letting bread crumbs and other hotdog makings spill into the water throughout the day is just added flavor! hehehe

Posted By: myway2rv on 04/26/05 05:26pm For us, just about any premium dog will do.
However, we do place a high priority on the chili sauce.
For that, we go with:
1 dollop bacon fat in the pan, medium heat then brown-up;
1 lb lean ground beef plus 1/2 lb of Jimmy Dean Hot sausage
Use a wooden spoon to break meat into fine mince while browning.
add 1/2 c of finely diced onion plus 1 tbs minced garlic (sometimes 2)
2 or 3 glugs of Worcestershire, mix and continue til the onions look soft
add 2 Tbs of chili powder plus 1 tsp of cumin plus 1/8 (ish) cayenne pepper
add tbs of tomato paste and 1 dark beer, I prefer a black & tan Yuengling.
Adjust consistency of chili with 2nd beer or drink it if OK.
then on a lightly steamed bun, slather on mustard, insert dog top with chili, then sprinkle on shredded cheddar with some finely chopped onion.
Now that's my way, hope you'll try it.

Bummer! There has to be a grocery in MA that has them! I think they originated in NY or NJ. Not sure what they put in those things (not sure I want to know ether[emoticon]) but they have a flavor that is quite unique. Sahlen's Smokehouse Hot Dogs from Buffalo, NY are the best!

I second this!!!!

These are probably THE best hotdogs. These are what Ted's hotdogs here in Western NY use along with his location in Tempe AZ.... ...Wardynski Hot dogs are a close second....

Posted By: jlinsmith on 04/06/05 01:48pm Chiming in from the West Coast here, got to go with Hebrew National. Even the reduced fat version are mighty good! Like them best with a little bit of onion, relish and mustard. And, jsut about any chili cheese dog is a good one in my opinion. Love Cupids and Pinks!

YEAH! The ones they sell outside of Costco are really good, too. Hebrew Nat'l, I think.

Posted By: R & C CAMPERS on 04/26/05 09:46am For any of you living in the Houston area, or anywhere there is a HEB food store (you'll know if there is one in your neighborhood). Try the HEB brand Texas Heritage Hot Dog. The meat is more course than your usual hot dog. They come in Traditional, Hickory Smoked or Jalapeno w/cheese (this one is hot). They're good any way you cook them.

Posted By: jwduke on 05/08/05 05:10pm If you are in the midwest (IA or NE) try Fairbury Stadium Dogs or Wimmer's NC hotdog's. As for sausage Old Folks is tough to beat, especially the maple syrup ones. As for brats, Johnsonville bear brats are the BEST!

Posted By: GerryB54 on 04/03/05 09:22am Follow up on Maine red hot dogs:

Instant messaged last night with a reliable Maine source of information (Captain Ray of this forum), and he stated that Jordan's are the only red hots still available...so I was not remembering it correctly.

I have heard that Tyson's had bought them out, so who knows if the product will change...regardless, an A-1 hot dog experience!

Posted By: SooperDaddy on 05/10/05 10:17pm We like Farmer Johns, but it might be a west coast only dog? No fillers, no organ meat. Naturally smoked too, steve
